Backlighting (Contre-Jour)

December 4, 2010

Even if it is very challenging to use it, backlighting has always been one of my favorite photography technics. It is a great way to make a sometimes simple subject interesting and mysterious because only its silhouette is going to appear on the photograph.

While walking around Paris with Alex, we saw these large number of birds in a tree and realized that it was going to be hard to capture the scene with the camera because of the strong backlight and the clear blue sky. But I decided to try anyway and loved the effect generated by the contre-jour. It is as if the photograph turned into a mysterious painting. It reminds me of the Hitchcock movie “The Birds”. The birds are all black and mysterious and you nearly wonder if they are going to dive on us.

I am quite glad there was a “contre-jour” for this photograph as I don’t think it would have looked as interesting if we had been able to see the details of the birds and the tree.
